Clary Sage: The Essential Oil That Saved My Sanity

For more years than I can count, I have been on birth control.  As a never been married, no children having, sexually active woman its my personal measure on “preventing accidents”. A few years ago, my gynecologist encouraged me to come off of my quarterly Depo-Provera injection to give my body a chance to develop a natural cycle.  It took almost a year for me to clock in a normal menstrual cycle. FYI – a normal cycle when coming off of over 16 years of birth control usage was deemed as having three periods within 90 days, with a cycle being every 21-28 days.

And with my now normal menstrual cycle came those damn menstrual cramps. Menstrual cramps that literally kicked my uterus into my back, woke me up in the middle of night and had me shutting down once a month for 3-4 days at a time.

After numerous rounds of testing, it was determined that I did not have PCOS.  And while I do have fibroids, there are only three and they are less than 1cm in diameter. I am just one of those women blessed with a fully functioning uterus that has painful menstrual cramps.

By now you are probably wondering why I am spilling all of my business.  I tried so many different remedies for my cramps. The one thing that does work are controlled substance medications, however, I wanted something more natural. One night while scrolling the internet for another remedy I found an article on the benefits of using clary sage oil to relieve menstrual cramps.  The next morning, I rushed over to Whole Foods and purchased a bottle.

What is Clary Sage Oil?

Clary sage is an essential oil created by steam distillation. It comes from the buds and leaves of the clary sage (salvia sclarea) plant. It has long been used for its healing and medicinal properties. Though clary sage is related to garden sage, it isn’t the same plant and has its own benefits.

Using Clary Sage Oil

To reap the relaxation benefits of clary sage oil, simply dilute it with your favorite carrier oil (my favorite is Moroccan Argan Oil) and dispense it from a diffuser. If you don't have a diffuser, you can fill a spray bottle with filtered water. Then, add several drops of clary sage essential oil to the water. Spray it into the air a few feet in front of you, taking deep slow breaths to take in the aroma. You can also spray the water bottle directly onto an affected area and rub it in, using circular motions. If you choose to apply it to the skin, you may also choose to add another essential oil for scent or other benefits.
